Workshop Description

In this 5 day Alla Prima workshop we learn how to demystify portrait painting and  break down the pose into manageable steps by using a systematic 4 step process. We learn how to accurately mix any colour by working with a limited palette of 7 colours. The primary palette will deepen our understanding of the relationship between hue value, chroma. and will learn how to mix flesh tones in 3 simple steps. We will paint 1 or 2 portraits per day and learn how to get a good likeness in a limited time frame

In this workshop you will learn how to…

  • Simplify and translate proportions from 3d- 2d
  • Average and mass values shapes
  • Create 4 types of contrast in your painting
  • Mix any colour in just 3 steps
  • interpreting colours when they aren't obvious
  • How to troubleshoot when things go awry

This workshop includes demo’s and critiques on a daily basis.

Bio

Dominique Medici is a figurative oil painter based in Seattle. She studied in London and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Medici has received awards from The Portrait Society of America, Art Renewal Center, Oil Painters of America, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club among others. Dominique has undertaken numerous portrait commissions and her work is displayed in many private collections throughout the US and Europe, Dominique has a passion for teaching and teaches workshops and online painting classes.

Artist Grade Oil Paints (at least 40ml tubes)

 

Mars Black or Ivory Black

Cobalt Teal

Cadmium Yellow Light

Cadmium Red Light

Quinacridone Red

 

Canvas 

Three 9x12 inches Gesso or Linen Boards 

Two 11x14 inches Gesso o Linen Boards 

Brushes 

Any professional brushes in the following sizes are fine,

Hog Hair or Natural Bristle  (Flat and/or Filbert) #4 (2), #6 (2) #8 (1)

Kolinsky Sable or synthetic (pointed) #4 (1)

Dominique has her own basic brush set available here that you can use as a guide, or order the set directly.

Solvents

We insist on Gamsol in the studio. A small bottle will be plenty.

Medium

Good quality Refined Linseed oil.

Palette

Use a grey palette. You can make a grey palette by painting the back of a piece of plexiglass with grey acrylic or buy one from your local art store.
