Head Instructor at Edinburgh Atelier Ewan McNaughton takes artists through the stages of Caravaggio’s incredible approach to oil painting in this seven day workshop. Working from a print, you will paint your own Caravaggio copy to take home. This course teaches how to achieve the dramatic chiaroscuro effect as seen in the paintings of this Italian Baroque master. You will learn the specific step-by-step process and a clear understanding of the principles of oil painting as a whole, and the best techniques and materials to use. All levels of ability welcome.

Materials required:

  • Artist grade oil paints, recommended brands; Winsor and Newton, Old Holland, Michael Harding, Gamblin
  • Titanium White
  • Naples Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Viridian
  • Vermillion
  • Indian Red or Light Red
  • Raw Umber
  • Ivory black
  • Ultramarine

  • Gamsol oderless mineral spirit
  • Cold pressed linseed oil
  • Small jar with lid for cleaning brushes
  • Palette attachable medium cups with lids for holding medium
  • Large palette wooden or tear off (not white)
  • Paper towels
  • A range of long handled filbert brushes from big to small (the more the better)
  • A two inch decorator’s paint brush
  • One stretched and primed canvas 18 x 24 inches, or 40 x 60 cm
